I did run full suite on the slowest board, but there are no surprises. There are no low resolution tests because they are not accepted by my display, what modes is the Mystique trying to set? The framerate is not any higher than d3d wrappers anyway. However, that card only could accelerate a very limited feature set, and was primarily targeted at CAD applications. PCI interface was enriched by bus mastering.

Matrox’s first graphics card product was the ALT for S bus computers, released in Matrox had been known for years impressiin a significant player in the high-end 2D graphics accelerator market. In the beginning of the nineties the mission was to bring workstation class performance to a PC.

Matrox Mystique

Dual ported VRAM was employed to relieve frame-buffer bandwidth from screen refresh and enabled block transfers. Imression runs fast at x, but I feel slowdowns in complex scenes.

Archived from the original on From a business point of view it did its job well. By using graphlc site, you agree to the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.

These theoretical numbers are as usual far from gaming reality. Including bilinear filtering would have incurred a significant cost in the chip’s transistor budget for more computational resources and potentially reduce graphics core clock speed and performance due to a larger chip design. First decision is if to leave default 2: In general, compared to its peers, the Matrox Mystique was a competent imprssion with its own set of advantages and disadvantages as was typical in this era of early 3D accelerators.

Detractors, however, referred to the card as the “Matrox Mystake”. Limited feature set prevents quite a few games from working imprrssion or at all on the Mystique.

mtrox It was based heavily on the Millennium but with various additions and some cost-cutting measures. It is not nice to keep customers in the dark around such matters.

It was not uncommon to pair up the Mystique or another Matrox card with a 3Dfx Voodoo Graphics 3D-only board because the Voodoo cards were the fastest and most well-supported 3D accelerators at the time. Mystique’s image quality became impresxion inadequate and perhaps from there comes the bad nick “Matrox Mistake”. The newer Millennium card also contained 3D capabilities similar to graphlc Impression Plus, and was nearly as limited. However, that card only could accelerate a very limited feature set, and was primarily targeted at CAD applications.

Millennium’s engine is exposed to Imlression, but I don’t know any titles except Turok which would not require texturing. Older 3d chips of Matrox had separate unit for shading and depth interpolation, but in Mystique these are now part of the DPU.

The frequency reduction affected the maximum refresh rate the card could run at high resolutions, crippling the Mystique for users of displays running UXGA x, for example.

A later version of the Millennium included features similar to the Impression but by this time the series was lagging behind emerging vendors like 3dfx Interactive. Some textures in Incoming are missing like if 4 MB of chip is not impressioon. In addition to the proprietary drivers provided by Matrox, the DRI community has provided drivers under the GPL license for many more of the devices.

Unlike Millennium these boards had friendly pricing and still good GUI performance as one would expect from Matrox. Newer revisions of Mystique do not want to texture from system memory, so Direct3d compatibility with 2 MB is too low to be bothered.

Mystiques equipped with 4 MB were upgradable to impressive 8 MB, but I doubt more memory would make much difference for this chip. Few titles from bundle of gaming edition had around polygon scenes. This card came with a different software bundle targeting business users and excluding the games.
